This map is a resource for patients, families, clinicians, and researchers. Its purpose is to provide a comprehensive, verified directory of facilities performing Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) across the United States. By visualizing these services, we aim to help patients make informed decisions about their care and help researchers identify geographical disparities in mental health access.
The data began with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) 2024 National Directory of Mental Health Treatment Facilities. To ensure accuracy, every facility listed was manually contacted via telephone to verify they currently offer ECT services.
Additionally, exhaustive targeted internet searches were conducted across all US states and territories consisting of "electroconvulsive therapy" and "(state name)". To identify potential "service deserts," deep-web searches were performed for counties with populations over 100,000 located more than 50 miles from a known facility. Every new facility identified through this process was also manually verified by phone. The resulting data was processed and analyzed using Python and SQL within Google’s BigQuery environment.
While this directory includes 328 verified facilities, it is not an exhaustive list of every location where ECT may be performed (such as private practices or smaller community hospitals that do not appear in federal directories and lack websites). This map is intended to supplement—not replace—consultations with a medical professional. Always talk to your doctor about the treatment options and facilities best suited for your specific needs.
Data accuracy is a priority. If a facility is identified that no longer provides ECT, or if there is a verified facility that was missed, please use the Feedback button below. The Map of ECT Project will investigate and update the map regularly.
